Photocatalytic Water Purification: TiO2 vs Membrane Filtration
Interactive TiO2 nanoparticle photocatalysis simulator: watch UV light activate titanium-dioxide nanoparticles that generate hydroxyl radicals and mineralize dissolved organic pollutants on contact, compared side-by-side with a membrane-filtration mode that only strains out large particulates while letting the same dissolved molecules pass straight through.
This simulator contrasts two water-treatment mechanisms at the nanoscale. In photocatalysis mode, UV light activates suspended titanium-dioxide nanoparticles that generate hydroxyl radicals and mineralize dissolved organic pollutant molecules on contact — a destructive chemical process. In membrane-filtration mode, a physical pore mesh strains the same feed stream by size alone: large particulates are caught on the membrane face, but the dissolved molecules are far smaller than any pore and pass straight through, chemically unchanged.
Interactive TiO2 nanoparticle photocatalysis simulator: switch on the UV lamp to activate suspended titanium-dioxide nanoparticles, which generate hydroxyl radicals that mineralize dissolved organic pollutant molecules into CO2 and water on contact. Switch to membrane-filtration mode and watch the same dissolved molecules sail straight through the pore mesh untouched while only large particulates get caught, contrasting a destructive chemical process with a purely physical sieve.
