Photocatalytic Water Purification: TiO2 vs Membrane Filtration

This simulator contrasts two water-treatment mechanisms at the nanoscale. In photocatalysis mode, UV light activates suspended titanium-dioxide nanoparticles that generate hydroxyl radicals and mineralize dissolved organic pollutant molecules on contact — a destructive chemical process. In membrane-filtration mode, a physical pore mesh strains the same feed stream by size alone: large particulates are caught on the membrane face, but the dissolved molecules are far smaller than any pore and pass straight through, chemically unchanged.
