Skin Barrier: Lipid Mortar Integrity Lab
Interactive 3D model of the stratum corneum's brick-and-mortar structure: drag barrier integrity from intact to damaged and watch the lipid mortar between corneocytes visibly gap, water vapor escape faster (rising TEWL), and irritant particles punch through instead of being blocked.
The stratum corneum blocks water loss and outside irritants at the same time, using one structure: flattened corneocyte "bricks" sealed together by a layered lipid "mortar." This model erodes that mortar as you drag barrier integrity down, so you can watch water escape faster (rising TEWL) and irritant particles start punching through the same widening gaps, live.
Interactive 3D cross-section of the stratum corneum's brick-and-mortar structure: drag the lipid mortar's integrity from intact to depleted and watch the seams between corneocyte bricks visibly gap open, water molecules escape upward faster (a live transepidermal water loss readout), and irritant/allergen particles switch from being blocked at the surface to punching straight through into deeper skin.
