Skin is a layered organ, and its outermost sliver — the stratum corneum — does most of the work of keeping water in and the outside world out. This simulation shows both sides of that job at once: a wound cutting through the layers closing in real time through hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling, and a stream of moisture and pathogen particles testing the barrier's integrity along the intact skin around it. Adjust wound width, healing rate and barrier integrity, or trigger an infection, to see how each interacts with the others.
