Hyena Clan Calls Lab (2D)
2D top-down hyena clan-call lab: each hyena is a Kuramoto phase oscillator whooping on its own rhythm, coupled to clan members within earshot — turn up call volume to pull the clan into sync, turn up background noise to knock it back apart.
This 2D companion models the acoustic side of the 3D clan scene as coupled phase oscillators: each hyena whoops on its own internal rhythm, but calls from clan members within earshot pull that rhythm toward theirs — the same Kuramoto coupling model used to explain synchronized firefly flashing and clapping audiences. Push call volume up and background noise down and the clan's whoops lock into a synchronized chorus, visible as the flash rings firing together; do the opposite and the calls stay scattered, exactly as real hyena clans lose coordination in noisy or spread-out conditions.
Top-down 2D Kuramoto phase-oscillator model: hyenas whoop on individual rhythms, couple with nearby clan members by an exponential hearing-range falloff, and background noise injects jitter that fights the coupling — clan synchrony is read out live as the Kuramoto order parameter.
