🧪 Energy Technology Hydrogen Fuel Simulation
Interactive steam methane reforming (SMR) simulator: tune reformer temperature, pressure and steam-to-carbon ratio and watch the CH4 + H2O ⇌ CO2 + H2 equilibrium shift in real time, with live conversion, hydrogen yield and Kp readouts.
Steam methane reforming (SMR) is the process behind almost all the hydrogen made on Earth today: natural gas and steam pass over a nickel catalyst at high temperature, reacting toward CO2 and H2 in a reaction that is both endothermic and mole-increasing. This simulator solves the real chemical-equilibrium expression for that reaction — Kp(T) as a function of Gibbs free energy — against a live material balance, so tuning reformer temperature, operating pressure and the steam-to-carbon feed ratio genuinely shifts the equilibrium extent of reaction, not just a cosmetic number. A 3D reactor tube shows gas flowing through the catalyst bed, with each molecule converting from reactant blue to product amber at the point along the tube where the current conversion fraction says it should, while live readouts track CH4 conversion, hydrogen yield and the equilibrium constant itself.
This simulation explores the science behind hydrogen fuel technology. It demonstrates the chemical reactions involved in hydrogen production and utilization, highlighting its potential as a clean energy source.
