This simulation runs a live merit-order dispatcher across three grid-scale storage technologies — a fast lithium-ion battery bank, a large pumped-hydro reservoir and a compressed-air energy storage (CAES) cavern — against a repeating day of solar-plus-wind generation and a city demand curve. Every simulated hour the surplus or deficit between supply and demand is routed to the cheapest, fastest, most efficient store with headroom first, exactly as real grid operators schedule mixed storage fleets. Sliders control how volatile the renewable output is, how sharp the evening demand peak gets, and how large the battery bank is sized, while live readouts total the curtailment avoided, the curtailment that still slipped through, the round-trip efficiency actually achieved, and any unmet demand — the three storage structures fill and drain in the 3D scene as pulsing energy beams show exactly which technology is charging or discharging at any moment.

⚙ Under the hood

This simulation explores different methods for storing energy, including batteries, pumped hydro storage, and compressed air energy storage. It demonstrates the crucial role of energy storage in a renewable energy future.
