Heating industrial processes above 100°C is one of the hardest slices of manufacturing to decarbonize — most of that heat is still made by burning gas. High-temperature industrial heat pumps instead pump waste heat "uphill" using a vapor-compression cycle, the same basic loop as a refrigerator run in reverse and scaled up. This simulation animates refrigerant travelling through the evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion valve while computing the coefficient of performance (COP) live, and puts that number head-to-head against simply burning fuel to make the same heat.
