Thermal Mass & Night-Flush Cooling (2D)
Interactive 2D lumped-RC thermal model comparing light, medium, and heavy thermal-mass buildings side by side against a day/night outdoor swing. Toggle night-flush ventilation, tune the outdoor swing and internal gain, pan the building row, and scrub the live temperature chart to see how much peak cooling load thermal mass and night flushing avoid.
Buildings with heavy thermal mass — exposed concrete, masonry, thick rammed earth — absorb the day's heat slowly and release it hours later, flattening the indoor temperature swing that a lightweight structure would otherwise transmit almost instantly. This 2D simulator runs the same simplified RC (resistance-capacitance) thermal model as the 3D version, but simulates the light, medium, and heavy shells simultaneously, side by side, against a shared sinusoidal outdoor day/night cycle. Toggle night-flush ventilation (pulling in cool night air to purge stored heat before the next day), pan across the three-building row, and scrub the rolling temperature chart to see exactly how many degrees of peak indoor temperature — and therefore cooling load — thermal mass and night flushing avoid compared to a lightweight, unflushed reference building.
