⛳ St Andrews: The Home of Golf and Scotland's Oldest University
An interactive 3D model of the St Andrews links landscape and the medieval university town beside it, with controls for wind, tide and time of day.
A 3D model of the St Andrews links landscape — dunes, sandy bunkers, greens and the shoreline — sitting beside the medieval university town founded on the same wind-scoured headland in 1413.
🔬 What It Demonstrates
Coastal "links" land is the sandy, undulating strip between beach and farmland that was too poor to plough but ideal for golf. The sim ties wind, tide and light to the terrain that produced the Old Course and the town beside it.
🎮 How to Use
Adjust wind speed and direction to bend the dune grass and flags, drag the tide slider to flood or expose the sloped beach, and move the time-of-day slider through a full day. Switch the view between the links, the old town and an overview.
💡 Did You Know?
The word "links" comes from Old English/Scots for undulating coastal ground. St Andrews' Old Course still uses the same double greens and out-and-back routing shaped by that narrow strip of dune land centuries ago.
