St Andrews grew up on a narrow spit of sandy, wind-scoured ground squeezed between the North Sea and the River Eden estuary. That coastal accident is exactly what made it the birthplace of golf: the rumpled, sandy "links" land between beach and farmland was too poor for crops but perfect for a game played across close-cropped turf, dunes and natural bunkers scoured out by the wind. A few hundred metres inland, on the same headland, the University of St Andrews was founded in 1413 — the oldest in Scotland — around the cathedral that once anchored the medieval town.
"Links" comes from the Old English/Scots hlinc, meaning rising or undulating ground — the sandy dune belt linking the sea to the arable land inland. The Old Course's double greens and out-and-back routing are a direct product of that narrow, wind-blasted strip of coastal geography.
