Deflecting a hazardous asteroid with a kinetic impactor is not just about how hard you hit it — the ejecta plume kicked up by the collision adds extra momentum beyond the impactor's own, captured by the enhancement factor β that NASA's DART mission measured directly at Dimorphos in 2022 (β ≈ 3.6).
