Interactive 3D crystal lattice: switch between BCC, FCC and HCP unit cells, watch an edge dislocation glide through a slip plane under shear, and see vacancy defects appear as temperature rises.
This simulator renders a block of atoms arranged in a real crystal lattice — body-centred cubic, face-centred cubic or hexagonal close-packed — and drives an edge dislocation through it under applied shear. Watch the highlighted slip plane glide one atomic row at a time, stalling at the dashed grain boundary unless the shear stress is high enough to push it through, exactly as grain boundaries block dislocation motion in real metals (the Hall-Petch effect). Raise the temperature to watch vacancy defects appear and atoms jitter thermally, following the same exponential law that governs point-defect concentration in real materials.
