VM Placement & Live Migration in a Cloud Fleet

Interactive 3D hypervisor fleet: watch a bin-packing scheduler place virtual machines onto physical hosts, live-migrate them off idle hosts to consolidate, and power hosts down and up as demand shifts.

This simulation puts a hypervisor scheduler in your hands: virtual machines with random CPU demand arrive continuously and a bin-packing algorithm places each one onto a physical host in a 3D data-center row. Switch between a Consolidate strategy, which packs VMs tightly so idle hosts can be live-migrated empty and powered down, and a Spread strategy, which balances load evenly across every host instead. Tune the arrival rate, host count and consolidation threshold to see the trade-off between power efficiency and burst headroom play out, with migrations, host power state and fleet utilization tracked live.

⚙ Under the hood

This simulation allows you to explore the core concepts of cloud computing, including virtualization, distributed systems, and service-oriented architecture. By managing virtual machines and network resources, you'll gain a practical understanding of how cloud providers operate.
