ORF Finder: Gene Prediction Across Reading Frames
Interactive bioinformatics simulator: scan a DNA sequence across all six reading frames for open reading frames (ATG...stop), translate them to protein, and watch the results highlighted on a live 3D double helix.
Genetic information is analyzed with computational tools — the core idea behind bioinformatics. This simulator generates a DNA sequence, scans it across all six reading frames (three on each strand) for open reading frames bounded by an ATG start codon and a TAA/TAG/TGA stop codon, and translates every match using the standard genetic code. Results are highlighted live on a rotating 3D double helix, colored per reading frame, alongside a scrollable list of every predicted ORF with its position, length and translated protein sequence — the same first-pass logic real gene-prediction software runs before statistical scoring narrows candidates down to actual genes.
This simulation explores how biological data is analyzed using computational tools – bioinformatics – to understand and manipulate genetic information within biotechnological processes. By simulating sequence alignment and gene prediction, users can gain insights into the complex relationships between genes and their impact on living organisms.
