🦗 Locust Swarms: Density-Driven Alignment and the Order–Disorder Transition

Marching locust nymphs in a ring arena (Buhl et al. 2006 style) switch from disorder to collective marching as density rises; Blender-modelled locusts, a Vicsek-type stop-and-go model, direction-flip statistics and a wind-borne flying swarm.

Marching locust nymphs in a ring arena switch from disorder to collective alignment as density rises (Buhl et al. 2006 setting): a stop-and-go Vicsek-type model with ring and 2-D arenas, group-size scaling with a fitted transition density, two-state direction-flip statistics, a noise-density phase diagram and a wind-borne 3-D flying swarm with Blender-modelled animated locusts. It differs from the basic locust phase-transition and Vicsek lab pages by reproducing the ring-arena experiment, testing the flip dwell times against a Markov model and adding the flying-swarm and swarm-versus-flock scale.
