Hydraulic Ram Pump: Water-Hammer Pumping Cycle

Interactive 3D hydraulic ram pump: watch the waste valve slam shut, the Joukowsky pressure surge propagate, and each stroke lift water into a delivery tank with no external power, with live cycle rate, delivered flow and D'Aubuisson efficiency.

A hydraulic ram pump lifts water using nothing but the water hammer it creates in its own drive pipe. This simulator models the full stroke cycle in real 3D: water accelerates down the drive pipe under a supply head, the waste valve slams shut once it reaches trip speed, a Joukowsky pressure surge races up the pipe, and — if that surge exceeds the delivery lift — a check valve opens for one pulse duration (2L/c) and pushes a slug of water into the air chamber and up the delivery pipe. Adjust the drive head, delivery lift, valve trip speed and pipe length to see how they trade off cycle rate, delivered flow, and the D'Aubuisson efficiency of an entirely un-powered pump.

⚙ Under the hood
