Motivation splits into two very different engines: intrinsic drive, which comes from genuine interest in the material, and extrinsic drive, which comes from an external reward such as a grade or prize. This simulator races two climbers up parallel towers, each one's climb rate set by its current effort level. The extrinsic climber surges ahead while the reward is on offer, then its effort collapses once the reward is withdrawn at the chosen time — while the intrinsic climber holds a stable plateau and, with enough self-efficacy feedback, keeps compounding as its own progress reinforces further effort. Tune reward strength, the removal time and the feedback gain to see how sustainable each style of motivation really is.
