Earth Overshoot Day Simulator

Interactive 3D model of Earth Overshoot Day: tune the demand of six footprint categories (carbon, cropland, grazing, forest, built-up land, fishing) against the planet's annual biocapacity budget and watch the calendar year cross into ecological debt.

Earth Overshoot Day is the calendar date each year on which humanity's demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what the biosphere can regenerate in that year. This simulator turns the underlying accounting into an interactive 3D model: six adjustable demand categories — carbon, cropland, grazing land, forest products, built-up land and fishing grounds — sum to a total "Earths demanded" figure, which sets where a 365-marker calendar ring flips from green (within budget) to red (ecological debt). Press play to sweep a marker around the ring in real time and watch a red debt halo grow around the globe once the sweep crosses Overshoot Day.

⚙ Under the hood

Tune six ecological-footprint categories against Earth's annual biocapacity budget and watch a 365-day calendar ring flip from green to red at Overshoot Day, when humanity starts drawing down natural capital for the rest of the year.
