Lake and bog sediment cores are one of palaeoecology's richest archives: pollen grains preserved layer by layer record which plants dominated the landscape thousands of years ago, and — via calibrated transfer functions — roughly how warm and how wet it was. This simulation lets you scrub through a stylised 12,000-year record, watching the sediment core's pollen bands and the vegetation ring around it shift between pine-birch tundra-steppe, boreal forest, and warm mixed oak woodland as the reconstructed climate changes, then compare any period directly against today's baseline.
