Vermicomposting Bin: Worm Population Dynamics

Interactive 3D vermicomposting bin: watch a red-wiggler worm colony grow, feed and turn organic waste into castings under a logistic population model driven by temperature and moisture tolerance.

Vermicomposting turns kitchen and garden waste into finished compost using a live colony of red-wiggler earthworms instead of the thermophilic microbial heat of a traditional pile. This simulator models the colony as a logistic population under two bell-shaped tolerance curves for temperature and moisture — the same functional form used to describe cold- and heat-kill thresholds and moisture stress in real worm-bin studies — with feeding, castings production and waste backlog tracked live. Push the bin outside the worms' comfort zone and watch growth stall and the colony die back; keep it in the sweet spot and the population climbs toward the bin's carrying capacity while castings accumulate at the bottom.
