Oyster Reef Breakwater 2D: Racing Sea-Level Rise
Interactive 2D cross-section of a living oyster reef breakwater: watch reef accretion race sea-level rise against a static gray breakwater, pan and zoom the shoreline profile, and track how crest freeboard controls the fraction of wave height reaching shore.
A living oyster reef is a self-healing coastal defense: its crest grows upward through biological accretion, so — within limits — it can keep pace with rising seas and hold onto its wave-blocking freeboard indefinitely. A static rock breakwater cannot; it only ever settles and erodes. This 2D cross-section simulator races the two side by side against an adjustable sea-level-rise rate and wave climate, modelling reef accretion as a submergence-dependent growth curve (peaking at an optimal tidal position, collapsing toward zero if the reef is outpaced and drowned) and wave transmission as a function of crest freeboard relative to wave height. Pan and zoom the shoreline profile, and read elapsed time, crest freeboard and the fraction of incident wave height still reaching shore alongside a running history chart of both curves.
