PUREX Solvent Extraction Cascade
Interactive 3D simulation of the PUREX liquid-liquid extraction process: watch uranium and plutonium ions selectively partition into a TBP/kerosene organic phase across a mixer-settler cascade while fission products stay in the aqueous nitric-acid phase.
A multistage mixer-settler cascade for the PUREX liquid-liquid extraction process. An aqueous nitric-acid feed carrying uranyl (UO2 2+), plutonium (Pu 4+) and fission-product ions meets an immiscible organic phase of tributyl phosphate (TBP) in kerosene at each stage: the two phases mix, settle into separate layers, and uranium/plutonium partition into the organic phase as neutral metal-nitrate-TBP complexes while ionic fission products stay in the aqueous raffinate. A redox-stripping control lets plutonium be reduced to the inextractable Pu(III) state and pulled back into the aqueous phase separately from the uranium product, mirroring the real partitioning step. Stage count is adjustable and live stats track extraction efficiency per species.
