Lanthanide Solvent Extraction Cascade

Interactive 3D mixer-settler cascade: two nearly-identical lanthanide ions (Nd3+ and Sm3+) are separated by repeated solvent extraction cycles, each exploiting a tiny difference in complexation strength that compounds into near-complete separation over many cycles.

Separate two nearly-identical rare-earth ions, Nd3+ and Sm3+, by repeated solvent-extraction cycles. Each mixer-settler stage exploits a small difference in complexation strength (lanthanide contraction); running many cycles compounds that difference into near-complete separation, while a single extraction leaves both outlets close to 50/50.
