A biorefinery turns raw biomass into fuels and chemicals through a chain of reactors, much like a petroleum refinery turns crude oil into many products. This simulator visualizes that chain directly: particles representing biomass flow from a feedstock hopper through a pretreatment vat, a hydrolysis tank and a fermentation tank, each one stochastically transforming — or, for the lignin fraction that resists breakdown, diverting to waste — as it goes. Adjust the feedstock's cellulose fraction, pretreatment intensity, enzyme concentration and fermentation temperature to see how each control reshapes the flow and the final ethanol yield.
