3D SN2 Walden Inversion

Interactive 3D SN2 nucleophilic substitution simulator: watch a nucleophile attack a tetrahedral carbon from directly opposite the leaving group through a trigonal-bipyramidal transition state, inverting the molecule's stereochemistry like an umbrella flipping inside out.

This simulation renders a single SN2 substitution event in true 3D molecular geometry: a nucleophile approaches a tetrahedral sp3 carbon from exactly 180° opposite the leaving group, passes through a trigonal-bipyramidal transition state, and inverts the carbon's spatial arrangement as the leaving group departs — the same Walden inversion that makes SN2 products the mirror image of their starting stereochemistry. Adjust leaving-group bond strength, steric bulk and approach speed to see how each changes the transition-state energy and the shape of the inversion.
