Viewed from above, a scatter of purely random points almost always contains a spot that looks like a hotspot — that is a basic property of randomness, not evidence of a shared cause. This 3D simulator plots individually sampled birth-defect events across a population grid, one point per case, all drawn from the identical baseline rate everywhere. Orbit the map to inspect whichever cluster of cells currently holds the highest count, then compare its observed case count to the population baseline with a real Poisson significance test — and watch the raw p-value get corrected once you account for how many regions were scanned before that "cluster" was singled out.
