Protein Feeding: Pollen Substitutes and Patties

How and when to feed protein supplements to honeybee colonies, from commercial patties to homemade soy flour recipes.

Why protein matters

Pollen is the colony's only significant natural source of protein, and protein is what drives brood rearing: nurse bees convert pollen into brood food via their hypopharyngeal glands, and a shortage shows up quickly as reduced brood rearing, smaller emerging bees, and in the longer term weaker disease resistance and shorter-lived workers. Protein feeding - supplying protein when natural pollen is scarce - is therefore usually timed around brood-rearing periods: early spring build-up before pollen sources are reliably available, and sometimes late summer/autumn if a colony needs to rear a strong batch of long-lived winter bees but forage has already dried up.

The starting principle for any supplement is that it is exactly that - a supplement, not a substitute for the real thing in the long run. Colonies with reasonable access to natural forage generally do better on pollen than on any commercial or homemade alternative, so protein feeding is most useful as a bridge during a genuine gap.

Commercial pollen patties

Ready-made patties are the simplest option: a pre-mixed, pre-formed protein-and-sugar patty that is placed directly on top of the frames, usually over the brood nest, wrapped in greaseproof or wax paper that the bees chew through. Their main advantages are consistency (the same formulation batch to batch) and convenience - no mixing, no mess. The trade-off is cost and a reliance on suppliers actually stocking fresh stock, since protein supplements can go stale or lose nutritional value if they've sat in a warehouse too long.

Whichever patty is used, placement follows the same logic as any inside feeding: directly over or adjacent to the brood nest, where nurse bees will find and use it quickly, rather than at the edge of the box where it may sit untouched and eventually mould.

Making your own patties

Homemade patties are considerably cheaper than commercial ones and let you control freshness and ingredients directly. A commonly used base recipe mixes soy flour (a plant-based protein source), brewer's yeast (adds protein plus B vitamins) and sugar in roughly equal thirds by dry weight - for example 50% soy flour, 25% brewer's yeast and 25% sugar - bound together with enough water (and sometimes a little vegetable oil) to form a firm but pliable dough. Higher-protein mixes shift the ratio toward more soy flour and yeast and less sugar; lower-protein, higher-energy mixes do the reverse.

Mix the dry ingredients first, then work in the water gradually until the mixture holds together without being sticky or crumbly, and press it into flat patties roughly the size of the frame top-bars so they sit neatly over the brood nest. Wrap in wax paper or greaseproof paper for handling and to slow drying out. Homemade patties should be treated as a fresh product: make batches you can use within a few weeks, store any spare in a sealed container somewhere cool and dry (or frozen for longer storage), and discard anything that smells sour or shows mould.

Other protein sources: soy flour, ground nuts and protein powder

Soy flour is the most widely used base ingredient for homemade patties because it is a cheap, high-protein, plant-based flour that's readily available and mixes well with sugar syrup or water into a workable dough. Ground nuts (finely milled nuts, sometimes used alongside or in place of soy flour in some regional recipes) can add protein and fat, though they are less standard than soy-based mixes and are more prone to going rancid, so freshness and correct storage matter even more.

Concentrated protein powders - whether soy, pea or dairy-derived (whey) - are sometimes used to boost the protein content of a syrup or patty mix without adding much bulk. Plant-based powders (soy, pea) are the more common choice in beekeeping supplements because they avoid the allergen and cost issues associated with dairy-based whey. As with any supplement, whatever protein source is used should be mixed thoroughly so the finished patty or syrup has an even composition, rather than pockets of concentrated ingredient that bees may reject.
