How Bees Choose Flowers: Foraging Behavior & Range

What foraging actually involves

A forager honeybee's job covers more than nectar. On any given trip she may be collecting nectar (a dilute sugar solution she concentrates in her honey stomach or "crop"), pollen (packed into the pollen baskets, or corbiculae, on her hind legs), water (used to cool the hive and dilute stored honey for larval food), or propolis (resin scraped from tree buds and bark, used as a hive sealant and antimicrobial coating). A single colony runs all four collection efforts simultaneously, with different foragers specialising on any one trip based on what the colony currently needs, as signalled by returning foragers and by hive conditions such as brood volume and stored honey levels.

Individual bees don't forage randomly. A young forager makes exploratory flights, then tends to become flower-constant — sticking to one plant species per trip even when other flowers are available nearby. This constancy is good for the plant (efficient, species-specific pollination) and good for the bee (she doesn't waste time relearning how to handle a new flower shape each visit).

How bees decide where to go: colour, scent and shape

Honeybee colour vision is shifted relative to ours: they see well into the ultraviolet and are strongly drawn to blue, violet and purple, followed by yellow and white; they are comparatively poor at distinguishing pure red, which to a bee's eye reads closer to black or dark grey (this is why red is often pollinated by birds or long-tongued moths rather than bees). Many flowers exploit this with UV-reflecting "nectar guide" patterns invisible to us but which funnel a bee straight to the nectary — dandelions and pansies are common garden examples.

Scent works alongside colour and is learned quickly: a forager that finds a rewarding bloom will associate its specific floral scent with the reward within a single visit, and will preferentially search out that scent afterwards. Strongly aromatic plants — lavender, thyme, borage — are effective partly because their scent is easy for bees to learn and re-find. Flower shape and size matter too: open, shallow flowers (single dahlias, borage, phacelia) suit the honeybee's relatively short tongue, while deep tubular flowers (foxglove, some clovers) favour long-tongued bumblebees instead.

Nectar and pollen rewards

Bees are highly sensitive to nectar sugar concentration and will preferentially forage on flowers offering roughly 20–70% sugar by weight, avoiding very dilute nectar as not worth the energy cost of collection. Once a forager finds a good source she communicates its quality, direction and distance to nest-mates via the waggle dance — a figure-of-eight movement on the vertical comb whose angle relative to gravity encodes direction relative to the sun, and whose duration encodes distance. Richer sources get more enthusiastic, longer dances and recruit more foragers.

Pollen is the colony's protein, fat, vitamin and mineral source, essential for feeding larvae and for young workers to develop their fat bodies and glandular tissue. Colonies need a broad pollen diet — some single-species pollens (e.g. some conifers) are poor in amino acid balance — so a planting scheme with several unrelated flowering plants in bloom at once meaningfully improves colony nutrition, not just food quantity.

Foraging range and distance

Honeybees can fly much further than they need to, but they don't like to. Given a choice, colonies forage close to home: most flight activity happens within about 1 km (0.6 miles) of the hive, since flight is metabolically expensive and a full nectar load makes the return trip harder still. When local forage is scarce, however, honeybees are recorded flying up to 5–10 km (3–6 miles) in a single trip, at real energetic cost that shows up as reduced colony growth and honey yield.

A widely-used rule of thumb from waggle-dance decoding studies puts average honeybee foraging distance at around 1–3 miles for nectar under normal conditions, contracting closer to the hive when good forage is nearby and expanding when it isn't. This is the practical case for planting bee forage near apiaries and allotments rather than assuming bees will simply travel to find it — closer, reliable forage measurably reduces colony energy expenditure.
