Dunnart Desert Insect Lab — 2D Night Foraging

A top-down 2D companion to the 3D scene: small nocturnal dunnarts make short ricochet hops across an open sand field, listening for insects within their hearing range and returning to the burrow to rest once their energy runs low — the same forage-and-recover cycle read as a clean overhead map with live contact, energy and burrow-distance readouts.

This 2D companion reads the same forage-and-recover behavior driving the 3D scene from directly overhead: each dunnart makes short ricochet hops across the sand while listening for insects within a hearing radius set by the Hearing slider, homes in and catches any prey it detects, and steadily drains energy as it forages — faster on colder nights, per the Night cold slider. Once a dunnart's energy drops low it turns back toward the burrow, rests there while its energy recovers, then heads back out to forage. A live readout panel tracks cumulative insect contacts, the group's average energy level, and how far the currently-foraging dunnarts sit from the burrow, making the trade-off between hunting further afield and running out of energy directly visible.
