Organic farms don't spread soluble fertilizer — they feed the soil food web and let microbes release nitrogen on the crop's schedule. This simulator renders a cutaway soil profile in 3D: a batch of organic amendment (brown particles) decomposes as soil microbes (green) consume its carbon, and depending on the amendment's carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, mineral nitrogen is either released into the root zone (cyan ions drifting upward) or pulled out of the soil solution to build microbial tissue. Adjust the C:N ratio, temperature and moisture to see how compost, legume cover crops, and carbon-rich straw behave completely differently in the same soil — the biological logic behind organic soil fertility management.
