Adiabatic Demagnetization — Cooling Toward Absolute Zero
Interactive 3D adiabatic-demagnetization refrigerator: cycle a lattice of paramagnetic spins through isothermal magnetization and adiabatic demagnetization steps and watch the temperature fall by a fixed ratio each cycle — approaching, but by the Third Law never reaching, absolute zero.
This simulator renders a 3D lattice of paramagnetic spins and drives it through the two strokes of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator: isothermal magnetization against a heat bath, then adiabatic demagnetization at constant entropy. Each full cycle multiplies the sample temperature by the same fixed ratio, so the entropy–temperature staircase keeps descending — approaching absolute zero but, exactly as the Third Law of Thermodynamics predicts, never reaching it in any finite number of steps. Sliders set the magnetizing and residual field strengths, live readouts track temperature, field, entropy and cycle count, and the spin lattice itself visibly reorders between disorder and near-perfect alignment on every stroke.
Cycle a 3D lattice of paramagnetic spins through isothermal magnetization and adiabatic demagnetization strokes and watch temperature drop by a fixed ratio each cycle — approaching, but by the Third Law never reaching, absolute zero.
