Adiabatic Demagnetization 2D — Cooling Toward Absolute Zero

Interactive 2D adiabatic-demagnetization refrigerator: drive a pannable/zoomable lattice of two-level paramagnetic spins through isothermal magnetization and adiabatic demagnetization strokes, watch the entropy-temperature staircase descend, and tune bath temperature, field strengths and cycle speed to see how each changes the cooling ratio.

This simulator renders a pannable, zoomable 2D lattice of paramagnetic spins and drives it through the two strokes of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator: isothermal magnetization against a heat bath, then adiabatic demagnetization at constant entropy. Each full cycle multiplies the sample temperature by the same fixed ratio, so the entropy–temperature staircase keeps descending — approaching absolute zero but, exactly as the Third Law of Thermodynamics predicts, never reaching it in any finite number of steps. Sliders set the magnetizing and residual field strengths, the bath temperature and the cycle speed; live readouts track temperature, field, entropy and cycle count, and the spin lattice itself visibly reorders between disorder and near-perfect alignment on every stroke.

Drive a pannable, zoomable 2D lattice of two-level paramagnetic spins through isothermal magnetization and adiabatic demagnetization strokes and watch the entropy-temperature staircase descend — approaching, but by the Third Law never reaching, absolute zero. Tune bath temperature, field strengths and cycle speed to see how each changes the cooling ratio.
