Oxygen Candle: Chemical Oxygen Generator

Interactive 3D model of a sodium-chlorate oxygen candle: a self-propagating exothermic burn front decomposes NaClO3 into NaCl and O2, the same chemistry behind ISS, submarine and aircraft backup oxygen generators. Tune fuel mix, catalyst loading and insulation and watch the burn front, core temperature and O2 output respond live.

A chemical oxygen generator produces breathable oxygen without any air, power, or moving parts — it is the technology behind emergency oxygen on submarines, the ISS, and airliners. This simulator renders a real 3D candle whose self-propagating burn front decomposes sodium chlorate into salt and oxygen gas, sustained by an iron fuel that keeps the reaction hot. Tune the candle length, iron fuel fraction, catalyst loading and insulation, ignite it, and watch the burn front climb the candle while core temperature, oxygen output rate, and total oxygen produced update live from the underlying Arrhenius kinetics and mass balance.
