Spacecraft life-support hardware doesn't fail out of nowhere — it wears down gradually with continuous use, and preventive maintenance is what resets that wear before it becomes a problem. This simulator tracks four components (O2 generator, CO2 scrubber, water recycler, air filter), each decaying along a smooth exponential health curve since its last service. Set a maintenance interval and the crew services every component on that schedule, instantly restoring health to 100% but spending crew-hours to do it. Push the interval too long relative to the degradation rate and components spend more time below the danger line before they're caught — push it too short and crew-hours pile up for little extra safety margin. The chart's sawtooth shape is the signature of this mechanic: a steady decline followed by a hard reset, repeated on schedule.
