Loop Heat Pipe Thermal Regulation

Watch a variable-conductance loop heat pipe self-regulate a spacecraft component's temperature as it swings between direct sunlight and eclipse shadow every orbit — and compare it against a component with no heat pipe at all, tracking the raw external heat load straight into a wild hot/cold swing.

A spacecraft orbits between direct sunlight and eclipse shadow while a variable-conductance loop heat pipe self-regulates a sensitive component's temperature — compare it against the same component with no heat pipe at all.

⚙ Under the hood

Watch a variable-conductance loop heat pipe self-regulate a spacecraft component's temperature as the craft swings between direct sunlight and Earth's shadow every orbit: capillary action pumps working fluid from a hot evaporator at the component to a cool radiator condenser with no moving parts, and the pipe's conductance automatically opens up in heat and throttles down in cold to hold the component near a fixed set-point. Toggle off the heat pipe and the same component instead tracks the raw external heat load directly, baking in full sun and freezing in eclipse — watch it repeatedly breach the safe operating band on the live strip chart while the heat-pipe trace stays inside it.
