Kepler's Third Law: Orbital Resonance Countdown (2D)

A top-down 2D orbital-resonance simulator: bodies whose periods obey Kepler's third law lock into integer ratios like 3:2 (Pluto-Neptune) or 1:2:4 (Galilean moons), with a live phase dial and countdown to realignment. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom.

A simplified top-down canvas view of the same real orbital-resonance mechanics: bodies orbiting a central mass with radii and periods linked by Kepler's third law, T² ∝ r³. Choose an integer period ratio and the bodies lock into resonance — 3:2 like Pluto and Neptune, or the 1:2:4 Laplace chain of Jupiter's Galilean moons — while a phase dial tracks the relative angle between the inner two bodies and a live counter shows exactly how many orbits remain until the starting configuration repeats. Detune the ratio and the dial sweeps continuously instead of repeating, the direct 2D signature of a broken resonance. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and click any body for its numbers.
