Oxygen Candle 2D: Chemical Oxygen Generator
Interactive 2D schematic of a sodium-chlorate oxygen candle: a self-propagating exothermic burn front decomposes NaClO3 into NaCl and O2, the same Arrhenius-kinetics chemistry behind ISS, submarine and aircraft backup oxygen generators. Pan and zoom the candle; tune length, iron fuel fraction, catalyst loading and insulation.
A chemical oxygen generator produces breathable oxygen without any air, power, or moving parts — it is the technology behind emergency oxygen on submarines, the ISS, and airliners. This simulator renders a flat side-section of a real oxygen candle whose self-propagating burn front decomposes sodium chlorate into salt and oxygen gas, sustained by an iron fuel that keeps the reaction hot. Tune the candle length, iron fuel fraction, catalyst loading and insulation, ignite it, and watch the burn front climb the candle while core temperature, oxygen output rate, and total oxygen produced update live from the underlying Arrhenius kinetics and mass balance. This is the 2D schematic sibling of the 3D version: the same chemistry and equations, drawn as a pannable/zoomable diagram with a live core-temperature strip chart instead of a 3D scene.
