Long-Lived Particle Displaced Vertex Search (2D)

Interactive 2D collider-detector simulator: long-lived beyond-Standard-Model particles are born at a central collision point, fly out in random directions with an exponentially-distributed proper lifetime boosted into the lab frame, and decay at a displaced vertex somewhere inside or outside the tracker. Drag to pan and scroll to zoom the detector view; tune lifetime, boost, veto radius and tracker radius and watch the live Monte Carlo reconstruction efficiency track the analytic formula in a second panel.

Most new particles proposed by the Standard Model's extensions are expected to decay essentially instantly — but a class of "long-lived particles" (LLPs) predicted by hidden-sector, SUSY and dark-photon models can survive long enough to travel millimetres or metres through a real detector before decaying. This 2D plan-view simulator recreates the core statistical signature collider physicists search for: particles born at a central collision point, launched with a Lorentz boost, decaying after an exponentially-distributed proper lifetime. Tune the proper lifetime cτ, the boost γβ, the tracker's inner veto radius and its outer radius, fire particles continuously or in bursts, pan and zoom the detector view, and watch the live Monte Carlo efficiency and decay-length histogram track the analytic formulas in the lower panel in real time.
