Modern particle physics probes the building blocks of matter by smashing particles together at enormous energy and reading out what flies away from the collision. This simulator visualizes that process directly: two beams of protons race around a ring in opposite directions and are steered together at a layered detector. Each collision releases its combined energy as a shower of secondary particles — usually a modest spray of common decay products, but occasionally, when the energy is high enough, a heavier, short-lived particle resembling the Higgs boson. Adjust the collision energy, collision rate and track visibility to see how each changes the character of what the detector records.
