Reconnection Storm (2D): Exponential Backoff & Jitter
Top-down 2D version: hundreds of mobile clients lose their backend connection at once. Watch exponential backoff and three jitter strategies (none, full, decorrelated) decide whether the reconnection wave overwhelms the server or fades out smoothly.
A mobile app's backend connection can drop for dozens of reasons — a cell-tower handover, a background app-server deploy, a load balancer hiccup — and when it does, every client that was connected notices within moments of each other and tries to reconnect at once. This top-down 2D simulator drops hundreds of mobile clients off a backend simultaneously and re-runs the reconnection storm under three real retry policies: no jitter (pure exponential backoff, lock-step and self-synchronizing), full jitter (delay drawn uniformly from zero to the exponential cap), and decorrelated jitter (each delay derived from the previous one). A capacity-limited server processes a fixed number of requests per tick; watch the load meter to see which policy drains the herd fastest without ever pinning the server at 100%.
