Nanoparticle Trophic Transfer Simulator

Interactive 3D bioenergetic model of engineered nanoparticles moving through a four-level aquatic food chain — tune assimilation efficiency, elimination rate and water concentration and watch whether nanoparticles biomagnify or, as real ecotoxicology shows, dilute up the chain.

Engineered nanoparticles released into rivers and lakes enter the base of the food chain and move upward — but not the way classic lipophilic pollutants like PCBs or mercury do. This simulator runs a live bioenergetic ODE model across four trophic levels (algae → zooplankton → small fish → predator fish), tracking each level's nanoparticle body burden from gut assimilation efficiency, ingestion rate and elimination rate. Tune the biological parameters and watch, in real time, whether the chain magnifies or — as most real ecotoxicology studies of engineered nanomaterials find — dilutes the nanoparticle load at every step up.
