Nanostructuring the electrode is one of the biggest levers in real hydrogen electrolyzers: shrinking a fixed mass of catalyst into more, smaller nanoparticles multiplies the reactive surface area without spending more precious metal. This simulator renders a 3D cathode studded with catalyst nanoparticles, drives it with the Butler-Volmer equation for the hydrogen evolution reaction, and shows how coverage, particle diameter, applied voltage and electrolyte temperature combine to set the current density, the overpotential, and the rate at which visible H₂ bubbles nucleate and rise off the surface — including the bubble-shielding feedback that throttles current at high production rates.
