Biosafety levels (BSL 1–4) exist because containment risk compounds: each extra barrier both adds a layer an agent must cross and makes every layer individually stronger. This simulator makes that compounding visible — a hazard core releases agents that drift outward through concentric barrier shells, each shell rolling a breach chance built from the pathogen's risk factor and the facility's BSL rating. Agents that make it past every shell in a row are counted as escaped (red); a separate monitoring/response layer can still recapture them afterwards, mirroring how real biosurveillance backstops a containment failure. Adjust the BSL level, risk factor, monitoring rate and spawn rate to see how the live theoretical breach-risk formula tracks — or diverges from — what actually happens in the simulation.
