A row of sutures closes an incision by pulling its two edges together, but the tissue between stitches is only held closed indirectly, through the elasticity of the flap itself. This 2D top-down view runs that as a real mass-spring system: each suture is a spring linking the wound's left and right edges, each edge point is coupled to its neighbours by tissue stiffness, and a suture that carries more force than the tissue's tensile limit tears and reopens.
