🧪 Materials Science Shape Memory Materials Simulation

Train a shape-memory alloy strip through repeated heat/cool cycles and watch it learn to bend on cooling and straighten on heating with no applied load — an interactive model of the two-way shape-memory effect and how thermomechanical training accumulates it.

This simulator models the two-way shape-memory effect (TWSME): a clamped shape-memory alloy strip that is thermomechanically trained through repeated heat/cool cycles until it learns to spontaneously bend when cooled and spontaneously straighten when heated, with no applied load. Each completed training cycle strengthens an oriented internal defect structure that biases martensite-variant formation, modelled as a saturating exponential; the 3D strip bends in real time from a live curvature model, small plates along its length visualise the oriented martensite variants responsible for the effect, and a live training curve tracks how the two-way strain amplitude accumulates and saturates with cycle count.

⚙ Under the hood

This simulation demonstrates shape memory materials and their ability to return to a pre-defined shape after being deformed. It showcases the underlying physics of this phenomenon.
