CO2 Pocket at the Sleep Station (2D)
Interactive 2D model of exhaled CO2 pooling around a sleeping astronaut's head in microgravity: pan and zoom a flat cross-section of the sleep restraint while breathing rate, fan power and vent distance drive the same live mass-balance model as the 3D version.
Without gravity there is no buoyant convection to carry a sleeping astronaut's exhaled breath away from their face, so carbon dioxide slowly pools into a stagnant pocket around the head — a documented ISS phenomenon that flight rules now guard against with mandatory sleep-station airflow. This 2D simulator draws the same closed-form CO2 mass-balance model as its 3D sibling as a flat, pannable and zoomable cross-section of the sleep restraint: a particle cloud standing in for local CO2 concentration grows, brightens and gets pulled toward the vent duct exactly as the underlying differential equation dictates. Tune breathing rate, fan power, and vent distance while watching the concentration, removal rate, and equilibrium level update live, and drag or scroll the view to inspect the pocket up close.
Pan and zoom a flat cross-section of a microgravity sleep restraint as exhaled CO2 pools around the astronaut's head with no buoyant convection to clear it, driven by the same live mass-balance model as the 3D version.
