Loch Ness occupies a straight strike-slip fault later deepened by glaciers, giving it extreme depth relative to its width. Draining the water and scanning along its length shows why the loch bed is so much steeper and deeper than the surrounding Highland glens.

Adjust vertical exaggeration to read the relief, drag the water level to drain the loch, and slide the sonar position from Fort Augustus to Inverness while watching the depth-sounder panel trace the real bed profile beneath the boat.
