Fault Zone Displacement (2D)

2D fault-zone lab: elastic stress builds against fault strength between stick-slip ruptures, offsetting a marker bed by real throw/heave geometry, with a Hanks-Kanamori seismic-moment magnitude computed for every rupture.

This 2D companion trades the 3D version's orbiting mining-plant decoration for the actual fault mechanic its title promises: a cross-section of layered strata cut by an adjustable-dip fault plane, driven by a real stick-slip loading cycle. Tectonic stress accumulates at a rate you set until it exceeds the fault's frictional strength, at which point the fault ruptures instantly, offsetting a bright marker bed by throw and heave computed from the dip angle, and every rupture's size is converted into an actual seismic-moment magnitude using the Hanks–Kanamori relation seismologists use for real earthquakes. Switch between normal, reverse and strike-slip modes — the last switches to a map view where a bent stream channel shows the lateral offset a vertical fault leaves behind.
