🧪 Conservation Genetics Simulation
Interactive conservation-genetics simulator: adjust census size, sex ratio and reproductive skew, watch effective population size (Ne) drive genetic-diversity loss in a live 3D breeding population, and compare it against the Ne/N 50/500 rule.
Conservation genetics turns on one deceptively simple idea: a population's census size and its effective size (Ne) are rarely the same number, and it is Ne — not the number of animals you can count — that governs how fast genetic diversity erodes. This simulator renders a breeding population as a live 3D cloud of individuals, each carrying one of several marker alleles, and lets you skew the sex ratio and the variance in offspring number while holding census size N fixed. Watch Ne fall away from N, the colour diversity of the population converge generation by generation, and the measured gene-diversity curve track the textbook decay formula H(t) = H₀·(1 − 1/(2Ne))^t in real time — with the classic 50/500 rule flagging when the population has drifted into the danger zone.
This simulation demonstrates the principles of conservation genetics, allowing users to explore how genetic diversity impacts species resilience. It highlights key concepts like population bottlenecks and gene flow.
